Equipment – Nikon D700

People regularly ask me about what equipment we use and what we think are the best cameras, etc.

My current main camera is the Nikon D700, I say ‘current’ because it changes every couple of years, and I say ‘main’ because we have a number of cameras and use them for different types of work.

This camera was the replacement for our previous main camera (the Nikon D200) and is the first digital camera that feels like the Nikon F5 film camera that we used when we started 12 years ago. Part of this is down to the full frame digital sensor, this means that it’s the same size as a 35mm negative as opposed to the smaller APS-C sensors that were the norm in digital SLR’s until recently.

One of the benefits of the full frame sensor is it’s sensitivity in low light – I regularly shoot at 6400ASA at concerts and weddings, and even bump this up to 10,000ASA for floodlit football matches. These are figures that would have been unheard of with previous digital cameras that only went up to 1600 or 3200ASA but to be frank were rubbish at anything above 400/800.

A great, solid, classy bit of kit and something that I can truly recommend – if you’re looking for a great camera check it out.
